Help your college student avoid alcohol

There is no denying the fact that college students like to have fun. In some cases, students go too far, which can land them in hot water with the law.

As a parent of a college student, you should do whatever you can to protect your child from an alcohol-related accident or criminal charge. This is easier said than done, but there are some steps you can take. Consider the following:

-- Talk to your child about the dangers of alcohol. Even if he or she is of legal drinking age, it doesn't mean they should go overboard. Regardless of age, excessive alcohol use can lead to serious trouble.

-- Keep an open line of communication. By regularly speaking with your child about the negative impact of alcohol, you may be able to hedge off problems before they start.

-- Learn more about the school's alcohol prevention programs and intervention efforts. This may sound like overkill, but it's a great way for your child to get the help he or she needs to avoid trouble.

At our law firm, we know that college students don't always have the greatest level of self-control. In some cases, this leads to a student being arrested for an alcohol-related crime, such as driving under the influence.

If your child is facing criminal charges, don't hesitate to step in and provide as much assistance as possible. This means learning more about the charges and consulting with an experienced attorney. By taking the right steps, you can do your part in helping reduce the impact of this serious situation.
