It’s important to check tires when temperatures heat up

It doesn't matter what type of car you are driving, it's important to check your tires every now and again. After all, this is your only point of contact with the road.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it's particularly important for motorists to check their tires during hot weather.

Under-inflated tires, especially at highway speeds, can contribute to the breakdown of the rubber.

Here's something to think about: NHTSA notes that approximately 11,000 accidents per year result from tire failure. Common causes of failure include things such as under-inflated tires, blowouts and tread separation.

Proper pressure is extremely important to maintaining a vehicle's tires. This helps with everything from traction to steering to stopping.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Check tire pressure at least once per month
  • Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle
  • Keep a close watch on your tire pressure monitoring system (if your vehicle has one)
  • Check your owner's manual so you know the proper PSI
  • Don't forget about your spare tire
  • Opt for a professional inspection if you are unsure about the condition of your tires

Summer can bring extremely hot temperatures to the state of Louisiana. As a driver, you need to know how this can impact your safety.

Although you may understand the importance of tire safety, other drivers don't always have the same level of knowledge. Unfortunately, this means you could be involved in an accident with somebody who neglected to check his or her tires for safety hazards. This could be a factor if you are seeking compensation for injuries you suffered or damages you sustained as a result of an accident.
