A veteran Slidell police officer is struck, killed by a motorist

An 52-year-old veteran police officer with the Slidell, Lousiana police department was struck and killed while riding his motorcycle on September 20, 2017. The officer had been off-duty as he rode his bike in the eastbound direction along Brown's Switch Road at around 10:28 p.m. Soon thereafter, a motorist switched lanes in front of him.

The motorist that allegedly cut in front of the officer did so in order to make a left turn into a driveway. It was as the woman switched lanes that the officer's 2012 Honda sports bike collided with the woman's Honda Civic.

When police arrived at the scene of the crash, they found the officer still wearing his helmet. He had apparently suffered severe injuries. He was first transported to Ochsner Medical Center and then later airlifted to New Orleans to University Hospital. It was soon after his arrival there that he succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased officer was reportedly married and had multiple grandchildren. He'd served his country as a member of the armed formes during Operation Desert Storm. He'd also worked for the Slidell Police Department for over twenty years. In an interesting turn of events, he'd recently been appointed to head up the department's fatality investigation unit as well.

As for the motorist that is believed to have struck the man, the Pearl River woman received an improper turning traffic citation for having caused the crash.

Police also asked the woman to submit to chemical testing to see if she was intoxicated at the time. She complied. Her toxicology tests did not indicate she consumed any drugs or alcohol prior to the crash. Despite this, a spokesperson for the Louisiana State Patrol noted that they have consulted with the District Attorney's Office in St. Tammany Parish about criminal charges potentially being filed in the case.

If your loved one has died after being struck by a vehicle, then a Baton Rouge car crash attorney may advise you of your ability to recover funeral expenses, lost wages, and related costs associated with their untimely death.
