5-month old baby dies in alleged distracted driving crash

Some of the most tragic accidents that happen involve children. When most of these accidents are preventable, it is even more tragic. An accident occurred between Denham Springs and Walker that will forever be remembered by those involved, as well as those in the communities.

A 23-year-old woman surrendered herself to police in Denham Springs after learning that warrants were out for her for negligent homicide, reckless operation and negligent injuring. According to authorities, the woman was weaving in and out of traffic, texting and speeding in the moments before the crash. She was allegedly driving around 10 mph faster than the 65-mph speed limit when her pickup struck the victims' vehicle.

A 5-month-old infant was in her car seat when the accident happened, but the force of the impact launched the seat straight into the dashboard. She suffered massive brain swelling and underwent surgery to remove part of her skull. Her 21-year-old mother, who was driving, found out after surgery that her baby would not live. She made the difficult choice to donate her daughter's organs.

While in the hospital soon after the crash, the two women ran into each other. They were friends from church, but neither realized immediately that they were in the same crash.

This crash was a tragedy -- of that there is no doubt. This was the mother's first and only child and her life will never be the same. If you have been seriously injured or your loved one has been killed due to another person's negligence, you have a right to pursue compensation. Damages might include medical expenses, funeral expenses and pain and suffering. An attorney can help you learn more about how to pursue compensation and what your legal options really are.
