A Slidell man dies after being struck by an errant boat

A two car crash at the intersection of Pecan Street and State Highway 18 in St. James Parish claimed the life of a 49-year-old Slidell resident on Monday, Nov. 27.

The crash, which occurred just before 1 p.m., apparently resulted from another motorist's boat becoming detached from the vehicle that was towing it. When the two separated, the water vessel was pushed across the line separating opposing lanes of traffic where it collided with the decedent's car.

According to police reports, the St. Amant man, who had been towing the boat with his Chevrolet Silverado, was just 20 years old. Witnesses reported having seen him driving northbound along LA 18 as the decedent drove south along the same roadway.

A preliminary investigation, conducted by Louisiana State Police, shows that both men appeared to have been properly restrained by their seat belts when the crash occurred. The 2016 Silverado owner apparently didn't suffer any injuries.

While the decedent was initially alive when emergency crews arrived at the crash scene, it was apparent that he'd suffered serious injuries. Paramedics with Acadian Ambulance Service rushed him to Gonzales to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He was pronounced dead soon after arriving there.

Neither party is suspected of having been impaired prior to the crash. The 20-year-old even willingly agreed to perform a breathalyzer test when asked to do so by police. A toxicology test was performed on the decedent as well before he expired. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

If you've been critically injured or have lost a loved one in a motor vehicle collision, a Baton Rouge car accident attorney may advise you of your right to recover medical, funeral and other expenses in your case.
