Car accidents and spine injuries

If you are involved in a car accident, even a minor fender bender, it's imperative that you turn your attention to your health and well-being.

You may not feel any pain or discomfort at first, but that doesn't mean you haven't suffered an injury.

Here are some of the more common spine injuries associated with motor vehicle accidents:

  • Whiplash: This typically occurs during a rear-end collision, as the force of the accident causes your head to snap forward and backward.
  • Spinal fractures: This is often the result of your upper body being thrown forward at a fast rate, all while your lower body remains in place (thanks to your seatbelt).
  • Disc herniation: The discs absorb most of the impact during an accident, which increases the likelihood of a herniation. This happens when the soft center of the disc makes its way through a crack in the exterior.

While these are some of the more common spine injuries, there are others that could come into play during a motor vehicle accident.

If you have any reason to believe you have injured your spine, you don't have time to waste. Symptoms of a spine injury don't always set in right away. Instead, it can take some time for these to present.

Since a spine injury can change your life in many ways, you need to receive and follow medical guidance. Along with this, it's important to learn more about the cause of the crash, as you may be able to seek compensation for this injury, pain and suffering, lost wages and additional damages.
