The consequences of being busted for drunk driving

If you're pulled over and accused of driving under the influence, the consequences are serious. As common of an offense as this is, many people don't really think about the ramifications until it happens to them.

Some consequences you could face include:

  • A suspension of your driver's license.
  • Longer suspensions for multiple offenses.
  • Jail time.
  • Heavy fines.
  • Many additional fees.
  • The mandatory use of an ignition interlock device. This device makes it impossible to drive while intoxicated by making you pass a breath test before you can start the car.

These are just the legal consequences. The real cost could be even higher.

For instance, some employers will fire workers who are caught driving under the influence. Plus, even if your boss doesn't fire you outright, does the loss of your driver's license make it impossible for you to work? If so, you could be looking at tens of thousands of dollars in lost wages, and you may lose your job entirely.

Your insurance company may also add onto the costs. Your monthly rates could jump if you're convicted, meaning you're essentially paying a "fine" every month. If you get in a car accident, even if you were covered, the insurance company may deny payment and make you cover any costs out of your pocket.

As you can see, the financial ramifications of a DUI conviction are enormous. It can derail your entire career and set you back years, perhaps ruining everything you've been working toward for a long time. That's why it's so important to know all of your legal options when facing charges.
